The beginning of a life of a jeweller...x
HIYA!
So I might as well start at the beginning…
A quick introduction for those of you who don’t know me!
I’m KAZ, the face behind all this colourful, playful, patterned resin jewellery.
I didn’t set out to be a jeweller….I applied to art college, knowing that I loved art and making things…that was the only plan I had!
When I got accepted to Edinburgh College of Art I was able to try a few departments before I specialised in a subject - THANK GOD! - The only thing I was certain of was that fine art was NOT for me, but what did I want to do?
Furniture of course…! I had it in my head that I would LOVE this…I hated it!…
Luckily I then tried the jewellery department…HELLO…I think I’ve just found my new home!
Before this point I had never experienced contemporary jewellery. In this department you could make jewellery from paper, wool, silver, plastic, or anything else you can get your hands on!. And the jewellery could be BIG! I had always though of jewellery as being very small and precious. Not here! The jewellery could be big, colourful and created in any material you could think of!
I feel VERY lucky to have been in the ECA department when it was run by the amazing Dorothy Hogg with the lovely Sue cross by her side. They were very good at helping us find our niche and putting us on the right path to experiment.
I also feel super lucky to have landed a studio at Coburg House with Donna Barry straight after we graduated.
Studio spaces are so far and few between in Edinburgh, so when we were offered the space at Coburg House in 2002 we jumped at it!
When we arrived at Coburg it was only one floor of very random, dirty studios with no community. Now 20 years on we have nearly taken over the whole building. There are 70 artists, over 4 floors, with a gorgeous shop and gallery that we open every weekend, and we host some of the best open studio events in Scotland two times a year!
And yes I did say 20 years on! I wonder what will happen in the next 20 years of KAZrobertson jewellery?
Most of my time is taken up by my jewellery business but when I’m signed off I do have another obsession…cats! I have three, and they genuinely keep me amused and annoyed in equal measures as any cat owner will probably agree!
So that’s the very quick intro into how I started KAZrobertson jewellery!
While you wait for the next blog instalment. Make sure you’re signed up to my mailing list so you don’t miss out on any special offers, exclusive launches, or the secret shop!
